I've always found Mrs Merkel rather boring. I'm sure there is an interesting story to her, perhaps a fascinating one, relating to her personal background. Even so, it's difficult to see her as anything except a competent politician with a significant strategic ability. Perhaps one day we'll say she made a terrible mistake over immigration. It's also possible we'll say it was a necessary step to take at the time, and that it was all part of the pressures of our age. In other words, Chancellor Merkel is a figure fitted to the bigger picture, a stable character about whom little will be said except in this grand picture of trends and movements.
